I had not realized I was looking for the Kids Best Friends mission once I got out of the service. I am a 10-year United States Army veteran, a wife, and a mother. I had the privilege of serving 4 years as an airborne military police (MP) officer, and then serving the last 6 years as a military working dog (MWD) handler. In my previous six years of service, I found my passion for working with dogs and keeping my community safe.
Kids Best Friends wants to place trained dog teams at schools to help deter and minimize the potential for school shooters. Their mission does not stop there, they also want the dogs to be able to be a positive experience for students. The goal is that these dogs can be approached and provide students with a type of mental relief while at school. As a handler, and now a mother, keeping children safe is my number one goal, and I will be able to do that now while also providing students with a positive source to look forward to every day at school.
I am getting to pursue my passion for handling/training dogs, with my experience in security and law enforcement, to provide a safer future for our children.

Working as a handler with the Kids Best Friends program has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I’ve seen firsthand how a highly specialized working dog can have a lasting, positive impact on the safety and well-being of students, their families, and the faculty.
One of the most incredible aspects of this program has been watching how the dog’s presence creates an environment where students feel secure and at ease, without the intimidation or fear that sometimes comes with traditional security measures. The students love interacting with her, and it’s heartwarming to see her become a beloved part of the school community.
The positive feedback from students, parents, and faculty has been overwhelming, and it’s clear that having a dog on campus is making a difference—not only in enhancing security but in fostering a greater sense of connection and support throughout the community. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a program that brings a holistic, balanced approach to keeping our schools safe.
